Flies on sap flow - male

Flies on sap flow - Male
Twin Springs Park, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
April 16, 2016
This spring, in my area, this species has been feeding and breeding at sap flows opened by sapsuckers on sugar maple tree trunks. It has a habit of wing pumping. This year it's been one of the more common and reliably seen flies on sugar maple sap flows here, in my experience. Here it is blowing a bubble...a common behavior among the different types of flies on the sap flows I've observed.
