dark blue (beetle?) larva - Dicaelus

dark blue (beetle?) larva - Dicaelus
San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, USA
May 1, 2016
Size: ~2 cm
I found this larva and an otherwise identical smaller one scurrying across a dirt nature trail. They are a dark, slightly metallic blue. Their final segment protrudes a bit, in addition to a pair of cerci. Their heads are bright orange in color. They were constantly scurrying about and so it was difficult to get a clear picture.

Dicaelus sp larva...
Very nice find! Now you can see what they'll eat in captivity!

thanks for the ID!
I wonder whether the large and small ones are female and male, respectively?

Fish food time! XD

No, probably just different instars...
They probably will not go for the fish pellets at all, Carabid larva will only eat fresh invertebrate flesh, not processed animal parts. The adults however are much less picky.

good to know
In that case, mealworm time!

Yup, hopefully prekilled mealies will work...
Otherwise snails may be your only answer. :(
