Milkweed Tussock Moth
It appears to be a Milkweed Tussock Moth, Euchaetes egle, but I don't know if they normally use Symphyotrichum as a host.

But was there Milkweed nearby?

 
That's very likely.
Although it was nearly 20 months ago, from the habitat (unmaintained meadow) I am pretty confident there would have been Milkweed.
