Travertine beetle - Lutrochus laticeps

Travertine beetle - Lutrochus laticeps
Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, USA
June 23, 2007
Size: 3-4mm
Collected from partially submerged rock in Milwaukee River. This individual was just above the water line on the rock, in amongst encrusted organic matter but plainly visible. I would like to thank carabid specialist Peter Messer for sharing his lutrochid knowledge with me and guiding me to these beetles.

Moved from Lutrochus. This species is the only one listed by Downie and Arnett for Northeastern U.S. I believe the other two are in Texas and Arizona.

New Family for bugguide!
I've just scratched another one off the Beetle Family Wish List :-)

Page created. Thanks for posting these. Since there are only 3 species in the U.S., maybe a species ID is possible.
