Gall
Duke Gardens, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
May 9, 2016
I found these unusual looking galls on an unlabeled shrub in the Asiastic Arboretum section of Duke Gardens. The shrub looks like some sort of flowering quince (Chaenomeles spp.) or a similar relative in the rose family. They are hard and solid on the outside, with odd streaks of yellow-orange growing on the outside. I thought it might be some sort of strange fungus, but when I split one open, I found a tiny larva inside... so clearly insect-caused. Any suggestions for an ID would be much appreciated.
