Large bee in Santa Cruz, California - Anthophora urbana - female

Large bee in Santa Cruz, California - Anthophora urbana - Female
Santa Cruz, Santa Clara County, California, USA
June 6, 2007
Large solitary bee with blue eyes, black and cream stripes. I am guessing a large male Carpenter Bee, but do not know the species. I did not really get a good picture of the face. I'm curious about the black forward facing projections in the last two pictures.

Thanks for the info!

I've made a link on the third image in this series to another image of an Anthophora urbana that look pretty similar, only that one is designated as a male. Is there an obvious difference?
