Size: Approx. 1/2" length
Multiple insects of this type on nectar rich flowering plants in area, esp. butterfly garden. Not noted on non-flowering flora. Winged but reluctant to fly.

- the butterfly garden probably has lots of milkweed for the monarch caterpillars, in which case these bugs are usually present too. More info here.

Thank you very much for the ID! There are plenty of monarchs present, throughout the year. So, you must be right about there being some form of milkweed present in the area. The only thing I noticed for sure was that these bugs were only apparent on plants in the garden area that were in bloom and tagged as nectar bearing.

EDIT: After looking at pics of various types of milkweed, there are some just down the path from this plant. Sigh, and after ID'ing the plant that it's on ... Giant Milkweed.
