Unidentified Beetle - Carrizo Plain N.M. - Eleodes

Unidentified Beetle - Carrizo Plain N.M. - Eleodes
Carrizo Plain National Monument - Painted Rock Trail, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
December 31, 2015
Seen on the trail to Painted Rock on New Years Eve.

I think this is E. giganteus
Profemora lacking spines. Eleodes (Steneleodes) giganteus. It would be nice to know the size. I'm pretty sure armatus doesn't occur in San Luis Obispo County.

It was quite large
The beetle was 1.5-2 inches long, walking along a sandy trail.

Definitely Eleodes, perhaps Eleodes armatus...
Lacks the spikes on the front tibia though... I know spike length can be variable but I have never seen any armatus completely lacking them.

Moved tentatively to Eleodes
can't 100% rule-out Coelocnemis...

Moved from Beetles.
