Moved from Chrysanthemum Leafminer.

Owen Lonsdale has examined females reared from thistle in Iowa and Michigan and says they are not P. syngenesiae, but we still need males to find out what they are.

Did you save the specimen?
Unfortunately it's a female, so the species probably can't be confirmed, but Cirsium is a new host record for any Phytomyza in North America.

Sorry, I did not.
It may be possible for me to ask somebody to procure some of these leaves from the same site next year... would that be ideal? I raised four of these, so I imagine some of them were male, but I released them all after photography.

It would be great to get a male specimen to Owen Lonsdale...
both for the host record and the state record. This species has multiple generations per year, so there may well be more opportunities to rear it this year.
