orange-and-brown stink bug - Banasa calva

orange-and-brown stink bug - Banasa calva
near Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada
April 2, 2004
Size: 10-12 mm
In leaf litter of woods. Cedar Creek's photo of Banasa has no green on it (like the other photos did) but this orange/brown individual seems different - lacks a pale spot at the tip of the scutellum, and the orange and brown combination looks unusual. Now I'm really confused.

Banasa calva
Thanks, Tom. David Rider also mentioned B. calva for this one way back in 2005. Moved from Banasa to species page. I changed the word "it's" to "its" on the species page ("its" is the possessive form of "it", whereas "it's" is short for "it is" or "it has").

Banasa calva
Robin, I just found a match for this in Marshall's book (1).
It looks the same as this one.

On the right track
Like everything else, stink bugs can vary as to their coloration, especially overwintering forms. This is a species of Banasa, probably calva.

Yeah, many of the stink bugs can be highly confusing. Banasa and Thyanta look superficially very much alike.
