Aceria elongata
Hi, I'm new to the site, and I don't know how to formally ID photos, but informally, I can tell you this is Aceria elongata based on the sugar maple host, erineum being red, and on the upper leaf.

Crimson erineum mite?
This would need a species page if it is. Not sure which name BugGuide would go with, but I couldn't find any of the ones listed here:
https://tidcf.nrcan.gc.ca/en/insects/factsheet/42?wbdisable=true

I'm pretty sure...
there are multiple species in more than one genus that make similar reddish erineum on maple leaves. At least, that was the conclusion I came to when I looked into this before. We need a mite expert to weigh in... if there even is someone in North America who studies Eriophyidae.

Mite experts
While I can personally vouch for the ID here as Aceria elongata, as this is one of the few described erineum mites in north america. unfortunately the true expert on the topic, Enrico retired a few years ago.
Have a big list of undescribed mites accumulating in my photos with no one to really send them to. Know of about 10 undescribed species on birches alone. Family needs a ton of taxonomic work.

Not sure how to ID things on this site though, can only figure out how to comment.
