"red cross" stink bug - Elasmostethus cruciatus
Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada
August 31, 2004
In back yard of country home. This looks like Elasmostethus cruciatus (1, 2, 3) - what the French call "La Punaise à croix rouge"

Red-crossed bug
I think this is right. This species is in the Acanthosomatidae, which I think is currently considered to be it's own family. The common name for the family is either parent bugs or shield bugs. I've seen this species referred to as the Red-crossed Stink Bug, but Red-crossed Shield/Parent Bug might be better.

Acanthosomatidae
Thanks, Joel. I've made the appropriate Guide pages.
