Ga-a-a-ah!
I am so envious. I never saw a single one of these alive in all my years in Oregon:-(

Thanks Eric
For the positive ID. I know you are the expert on this one, so I really appreciate your input here. And you know, it's funny how it works. You have to NOT want to see one in order to stumble across one. Hint: I found this one in my woodpile settled in for the winter (along with several other wasps). It's amazing what you can find in a woodpile as you start pulling the wood off for fires.

Thanks John
For the help in ID'ing this one. Appreciate it.

neither - nor
. . . but a giant horntail (genus Uroceras).

Ichneumon or Braconid Wasp.
I don't know these well, but think the striped legs point to Ichneumon.

(Written later: Wrong!)
