I've been waffling between bee fly, syrphid, and none of the above. So who is it?

I was beginning to fear it was a stiletto fly!

Bee fly.
This is almost certainly a bee fly of some sort. Venation excludes syrphids immediately.

I need to learn a bit about the venation difference, as I vaguely remember encountering it once before.
