Crane Fly - Bittacus strigosus - Male

there was a mass emergence of these crane flies. There were hundreds of them in the woods.

ID and sex
Bittacus strigosus, male. Great photo. The odd-shaped, multi-lobed epiandrial appendages can be seen.

This is a hangingfly
in the family Bittacidae, Order Mecoptera. They are related to the common scorpionflies. This one probably is in the genus Bittacus . - Chen
