Limulus polyphemus

Salt marsh, NW Great Salt Pond, facing the water rushing out with the falling tide. This is the first time I've seen a tagged individual. Underside of carapace with dozens of flatworms (Bdelloura candida; some of the smaller individuals may have been other species).

Welcome back to BI. Did you record and/or report this tag? I am part of the team that does the tagging and collects census data. The GSP is a particularly productive breeding ground for southern New England.

I did.

I reported it online. When did the program begin? I've never seen a tagged one before but I do remember hearing something a few years back about a potential study of them here to see how connected the BI and mainland populations are… This is always one of the most exciting animals to find for me. I don't understand why I didn't bother to get a shot of all the flatworms on the underside, but at least I did collect one.

The local program started last summer and is run out of Sacred Heart Univ. in Fairfield CT. I believe it covers much of the southern coast of CT and RI and also the north shore of LI. Kim Gaffett is the BI coordinator - we will be gathering census data on June 3, 5 & 7 (new moon).

Welcome back to BI. Did you record and report the tag number? I am one of the team that does the tagging (starting last year)! It seems that the GSP is a particularly rich and favored breeding ground for southern New England.
