Size: 15-20mm
A large weevil, at least 15mm long, might have been even bigger. It was on a buckwheat plant (polygonum sp.). Generic Id thanks to E. Eaton, see below.

Weevil
This is a species of Lixus, identified by its size, shape, and the pruinosity (easily rubbed off scales that give this specimen its reddish appearance). Nice image.
