Beautifully colored insect with long tail/stinger-like thing! - Megarhyssa nortoni - female

Beautifully colored insect with long tail/stinger-like thing! - Megarhyssa nortoni - Female
Warwick, Franklin County, Massachusetts, USA
June 30, 2007
Size: Body=2"; Black thing=4"
I have no idea what this is, or even what class it would fall under! It was in my back yard on the outskirts of a wooded area. It's total size counting the black thing was about 5-6 inches! The color was absolutely gorgeous! HELP!

i just found one in my front yard (in Minnesota)... im using it for my zoology project =)... does anyone know if they can sting you??

With the spotted sides
this must be M. nortoni. Great find, we had only one image in the guide!

I took a few pics...
Should I upload more images?

Oh, and thanks very much!

yes, especially if the other images
show different views, a couple more would be great. Just click on the ADD IMAGE tab that you should see below this image and add a couple. Thanks!

Well....that's about it for views!
I was so afraid I wouldn't get a good pic if I moved around too much! Thought it might fly away...which it eventually did!

Just a beauty

Size
If the size is right this is a Megarhyssa species.

Ichneumon Wasp
This is a female ichneumon wasp. The black thing is an ovipositor. See the guide page here.

You guys are fast! Thanks so much!
