tiny beetle - Notoxus murinipennis

tiny beetle - Notoxus murinipennis
Verona, Augusta County, Virginia, USA
May 31, 2016
this tiny beetle was at the porch light, perhaps undergoing a molt because the head around the eyes looks somewhat deformed ... any idea what it is and if it is undergoing another stage of metamorphosis? not sure if this is adult or immature, but will mark adult for the time being.

Beetles undergo complete metamorphosis, so they only molt when they're larvae (which look totally different from adults). By the time they look like beetles, they're done growing. When they first emerge from the pupa, they're lighter in color for a little while, but usually still recognizable.

thanks!
I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I took a look at some of the other photos of this species, and it seems that the unusual look to the head is standard equipment for this beetle! 8-)
