Hyperaspis sp - Hyperaspis jovialis - female

Hyperaspis sp - Hyperaspis jovialis - Female
Borrego Trail, Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, Orange County, California, USA
June 2, 2016
Size: 3.1mm
I was musing on how cool it was to find a Hyperaspis yesterday on telegraphweed...and then found another one in the process!

This one is a bit of a riddle. Visually it matches the presumed extinct H. mckenziei. However the chances of it being that species are slim. It is more likely an intermediate variation of H. jovialis. The most important difference between the two is in the dorsoventral form, with mckenziei apparently appearing concave while jovialis appears flattened.

I'll take a closer look at her tomorrow.
