large mosquito like bug??????

Every so often we see a large mosquito like bug here in MA. My husband says it is a male mosquitos, but I don't think it is. Most mosquitos are 1/4-1/2" at most. This bug looks just like one, but it is probably close to 2 inches. Does anyone know what I am talking about?? I wish I had a photo, but I do not. What is this bug???? Thanks for any help.

Cranefly
Probably a cranefly. Check out the different families in the Infraorder Tipulomorpha. They're quite harmless- many don't eat at all as adults.

Actual male mosquitoes are usually pretty much the same as the female mosquitoes except for the antennae

Male mosquitos
And more importantly...don't take a blood meal.:)
