What do you think of...
the Cactus Bug (Narnia pallidicornis or femorata maybe??)

Update: Based on the "National Wildlife Federation Field Guide to Insects and Spiders of North America" I am leaning heavily toward Narnia femorata. It is said to be present in southern California, feeds primarily on prickly pear, are 14-19mm long and the field marks and photo is near perfect match. I'm not an expert, but if an expert can confirm this ID I think your images may need a new guide page for this species. Nice work!
