Size: ~ 10 mm
I believe I have it narrowed to Callimoxys but C. fuscipennis and C. sanguinicollis seem very similar here. It is unclear to me what distinguishes the two.

Interesting, BugGuide only has ocularis
from Texas and Oklahoma. I wonder if any of the other images posted to sanguinicollis are actually ocularis?? Plus there are seven images posted only to the genus page. Hope your Kentucky friend can shed some light on how the species are separated.

and what about this Kentucky one?

Most likely not C. fuscipennis
Should be either C. sanguinicollis or C. ocularis based on the distribution map in Hammond and James (2011). I'm not sure I'd be able to tell them apart from a photo, though. I've asked a friend from Kentucky to take a look.

Is the Washington one wrong also?

Moved
Moved from Beetles.

Callimoxys fuscipennis
According to the recent-ish revision for the genus (1), we only have C. fuscipennis here in CA.

Thanks
Maybe the other species recorded in CA some years ago should be moved eventually, then...

Callimoxys on the move
I think I got the two western photos recorded as C. sanguinicollis (CA and WA). Now watch -- someone will revise the genus again!
