Canyon bottom in Mesa de Maya -- a plateau of highlands stretching along NM and CO border, east from Rockies to OK's Panhandle. Steep red-rock wall with scattered junipers. Broad canyon floor well vegetated with grass, forbes, cactus. Center with stream lined by willow thickets.

to be a very fine image of a Proctacanthella male. And in CO that limits the choices. I think it is likely exquisita. See what you think of the males on that page. This will be the shot I link to that species on my species pages for sure.

Fabulous scientific name. Thanks for the compliments and the ID. The match seems excellent, and this individual does not match the other 3 species of Proctocanthella shown on BugGuide, either.

I hope you can get an id - I haven't had much luck in western KS - must be too many similar species and the experts need the actual bug.
