clubtail dragonfly--possible male unicorn clubtail? - Arigomphus villosipes - Male
Griffith, IN Oak Ridge Prairie County Park fishing pond, Lake County, Indiana, USA
June 10, 2016
Size: maybe about 2 inches
I am continuing my survey of Dragonflies for Lake County, IN. Found a new one for me today. I am wondering if this could be a male Unicorn Clubtail. I am focusing on Pond Clubtails because it was found in a pond and has very yellow terminal appendages. Paulson's book shows a tinge of the reddish brown on the club that my picture shows. Curry's book only lists the Lilypad Clubtail for Lake County Indiana, but I think my specimen has too much yellow and the eyes were more greenish that blue. Hope someone can confirm an ID for me. Thank you.

As I now look at these two pictures, are they the same species? They were taken in the same small lake on the same day, so I assumed they were the same type of dragonfly. Now I am not sure. Could they be the same species but one be more mature than the other?

Clubtail
Loyce, your location is out of my range a bit, but I agree with you that this is an Arigomphus. However, there is far too little black on the abdominal segments for Unicorn Clubtail. Have you considered Jade Clubtail, Arigomphus submedianus. Your location is right on the edge of the range map in Paulsen, but it looks really close to your insect, including the thorax stripes.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my dragonfly. I did look at the Jade Clubtail but the legs are all black on my dragonfly and the Jade has tanish-colored legs with some black areas so I felt I had to discount it as an option. I will try to figure out how to add an additional picture that shows his dorsal view.
