Size: 1 1/8" long
Found deceased on driveway for no apparent reason. Probably not an underwing, hindwing is just plain brown.

genus Catocala
looks like Catocala epione - Epione Underwing - Hodges#8773 which has a dark underwing - also there is a North Carolina record here on BugGuide for June
