I read up on Spider Wasps and learned that they sting when provoked, and that their sting is quite painful. Now I know!

The key word is "provoked."
These are solitary wasps. They don't have a "hive" to defend, and are not territorial. To "provoke" one, you'd probably need to grab or step on it. :)

Yep
A few years back I used a tissue to rescue a wasp from indoors thinking it wouldn't sting me (I knew it wasn't a bee, hornet, or yellowjacket, so it's safe, right?). This was before I developed my interest in entomology so I didn't know any better but looking back I think it may have been one of these. Either that or a Sphecid or something. Come to think of I don't think this was it. But whatever. Point is, stinging wasps hurt if you bother them :)
