Tiny little beach beetles - Akephorus marinus

Tiny little beach beetles - Akephorus marinus
Beachside State Park beach, north of Yachats, Lincoln County, Oregon, USA
May 24, 2016
Size: ~6mm
There were these small ants running around on the beach and when they stopped, they just disappeared! When we finally got to see them we realized they were beetles, probably carabids? Here are three of the color forms.

As we read about this genus,
it seems that marinus may be restricted to southern California in the US. And this specimen seems to have the puffy pronotum that we see on obesus, so maybe it is just another color option for obesus. It is interesting that a number of references state that the beetles are strictly nocturnal. We were out in the daytime, midafternoon, and there were plenty of beetles scurrying around.

Interesting, will have to have Cristian
check out that genus. There were plenty of them running around on the beach.
