I'd probably not even bother keeping a photo this poor of a terrestrial beetle, but given that this one was underwater, I'm hoping that narrows the possibilities enough for an ID.

Moved from Beetles. This does seem right, thanks Reese! Three species found in MA so far; nitiduloides looks very different from mine, but lineatus and orientalis both appear really close, as do probably a few other species not yet included on the Guide...

hard to tell, but
this may be a Hydrochus, family Hydrochidae.
