Unidentified white moth - Hyphantria cunea Kohl's Ranch, elev ca. 5320 ft., Gila County, Arizona, USA June 22, 2016
Ponderosa pine/juniper/oak forest vic. of Tonto Creek.
On 30 Aug 2015 4 caterpillars were found crawling on outside wall. Next day, Aug 31 2015, all 4 had burrowed below the surface of the dirt on bottom of cage and were either still visible as caterpillars but motionless, or were enclosed in a webby cocoon with dirt stuck to it. On Sept 1 2015, all were in cocoons under soil. Overwintered in the basement in a plastic critter keeper. Removed from basement to patio on 28 Feb 2016. By 12 Jun 2016, no sign of emergence so I dug them up and opened the cocoons. Found 2 possibly viable pupae, size 14 mm. On 22 June 2016 this moth had emerged from it's pupa and was photo'd before release.
