Ants - Formica

Ants - Formica
Bolinus, Marin County, California, USA
June 21, 2016
Size: 1/2" more or less
Found this nest under a sheet of plywood.

Moved
This is one among several very similar species in the West of the Formica fusca group.
It is rather distantly related to Camponotus, and even if it were a Camponotus, C. chromaides is strictly an eastern deciduous forest species, not found anywhere within about 1500 miles of California.
