I think the yellow items you referred to in your remarks are the knob-like "halteres"...which are attached behind the wings and correspond to the modified (i.e. vestigial) hind wings in Diptera. They gyrate very rapidly when in flight, and serve as a gyroscopic reference system for orientation as the fly propels itself through 3-dimensional space.

Always nice to get more posts of this interesting species.

PS: I cropped your image, as the fly in the original post occupied only a small portion of the larger empty white background. Most BugGuide visitors only see a 560 x 560 pixel image, which shows very little detail if the subject is a small portion of the frame.
