Cixiid planthopper - Cixius nervosus

Cixiid planthopper - Cixius nervosus
Port Orchard, Kitsap County, Washington, USA
July 5, 2007
Size: .25 "
I've never seen one of these before. Have no clue what it is. I made the mistake of going outside without my camera, but when I spotted it, I ran inside and grabbed my Rebel XT. I was pleasantly surprized that it was still on my car. After I took several photos, it took off in a slow, lazy flying mode. This one is not a zippy flyer. I also noticed it has 4 wings (you can see the outline of the second set of wings in the photo of the top view).

Cixius nervosus
This is a Cixiid planthopper (the antennae are below the eyes). It looks a lot like Cixius basalis, which occurs east of the Rockies, but its genitalia are more similar to the Eurasian species.

Thanks Andy
