Despite recent reviews of Dasysyrphus, I am not comfortable that the genus identification is resolved. This keys to Dasysyrphus venustus which usually has antennae partly yellow but the antennae are totally dark. The key says sometimes all dark but the many specimens I had collected or studied in the U.K. had the antennae partly yellow. I am still only comfortable to genus. I have sent this to Martin for his second opinion. I think I can see eye hairs on the other image.

After going over that a little bit it seems to me that they are pretty difficult if not impossible to ID to species based on a couple (grainy) overhead shots like these. Much like the few Sphaerophoria and Temnostoma groups. Hopefully Martin gets back to you though with some insight.

Sorry the Syrphini are not my strong side and Dasysyrphus is a special nightmare! Even if I have the specimens on hand.... So we will leave it at the genus level...
