Rove beetle.
This is a rove beetle, family Staphylinidae, and one of the most 'gaudy' you will ever see:-) The species is Philonthus cyanipennis. Nice find. They normally occur in rotting fleshy fungi.

Philonthus caeruleipennis ?
Is it possible this is Philonthus caeruleipennis instead? I noticed some comments from Tom in regard to these two species on this photo:



It doesn't seem anything came of those comments, but if Dr. Harald Schillhammer is correct about P. caeruleipennis being the only one of the two in NA, then we should note it in the guide and make any appropriate changes. Unfortunately I'm no expert on Staphylinids, so I can't be sure, but he seems authoritative on the subject. Any thoughts?
