Moved from Subgenus Pachyconops.

Note this is actually in subgenus Gyroconops, from 3rd antennal segment more the 2/3 length of proceeding segment AND vertex as long (longitudinally) as frons.

There is only a single species in our area, sylvosus, which is distinctive in being nearly entirely black...except tibiae testaceous basally and face (not visible here) with whitish color...and in that the wing infuscation is (sometimes rather subtly) interrupted by a transverse hyaline strip in the apical quarter or so. Also, the thorax typically has longer hairs than our other Conopinae.

Great find...only 3 posts on BugGuide to date, this being the second (with Yurika posting a series about a month later). Although it ranges across the U.S., it is apparently rarely encountered.

The all-dark characters suggest something very close to Physoconops bulbirostris, but I'm not sure. Let's wait for an expert.
