New small insect to ID - Phymatodes nitidus

New small insect to ID - Phymatodes nitidus
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
July 6, 2007
This was a very small insect about 1/4 inch on a fennel plant. Would appreciate any info about it. Thank you.

Moved
Moved from Longhorned Beetles.

Cerambycidae.
Ted MacRae will probably know this one, but I'm placing my bets on the genus Phymatodes, a longhorned beetle. Nice shot, nice find:-)

Longhorn ID
Thank you Eric, it was very small.

I believe this is...
...Phymatodes nitidus.

How variable is this species?
The stripes don't match up with the pix we have:

???
This specimen agrees pretty well with both the type specimen of P. nitidus and this more similarly colored specimen. Despite Chemsak's ID of the specimen in the photo you reference as P. nitidus, it actually looks more to me like P. vulneratus (compare with this specimen). Note the broadly rounded pronotum of P. nitidus, versus the narrower and only slightly expanded pronotum of P. vulneratus, in addition to the differences in the elytral markings.

ID
Thank you Ted for the ID, Eric mentioned that you would be the one to confirm it. Thanks again.
