Ant and Midge - Camponotus

Ant and Midge - Camponotus
Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA
May 25, 2007
Size: 10-12mm
A male carpenter ant perhaps? Found an example in the guide of Camponotus nearcticus here which looks very similar. I think my example is about 11mm based on the stitch count of the fabric that it's on but the angle makes it tough to tell.

Came to UV light at night. He did eat the midge.

Very interesting
A very rare exemple of a predacious - or at least scavenging - behavior from a male ant. Most of them are reputed not to eat at all once out of their nest, the reason why they die quickly from exhaustion. This is indeed a Camponotus sp.
