Xylocopa virginica (Carpenter Bee) on domestic Monarda - Xylocopa virginica

Xylocopa virginica (Carpenter Bee) on domestic Monarda - Xylocopa virginica
Matthews, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA
July 4, 2016
Size: 25 mm
Each July the 100 or so stems of red Monarda ("Bee Balm") in our front yard are covered with exceptionally large bumblebees. At any given time there are more than a dozen, moving from stem to stem. The bees are uniformly large and appear to be an inch long. Their markings are quite uniform. Dark faces, dark abdomens, the first segment of the abdomen appears to be covered with yellow hair. The thorax has a distinct dark circular patch.
