Cacama crepitans

Cacama crepitans
James Dilley Preserve, Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Orange County, California, USA
July 4, 2016
I have been hearing this species at several sites but this is my first time seeing it, and I saw several on this outing. The population is particularly dense in mixed cactus/sage scrub at this location.

This is a loud species that gives a gradually decelerating rattle. The flight call is a subtle "ssip".
