"Macropteran" Roesel’s katydid - Metrioptera roeselii - Female
Bath, Summit County, Ohio, USA
July 7, 2007
This is a female “macropteran” Roesel’s katydid - Metrioptera roeselii. Phil Chaon found a few in Ashtabula County last weekend which I think represents Ohio’s first record. While atlasing a property in Summit County today, we found a field with well over a hundred of these European species! In the U.S., this species has been recorded in New England south to Pennsylvania and also Wisconsin and Illinois. It seems to be about time for them to arrive in Ohio.

Also, for those that aren’t aware, this species has two forms; macropteran (long-winged) and brachypterous (short-winged). From what I hear, macropteran is rare in Europe but is now the dominate form in North America.

Click here to see the "short-winged" form.
