Less than a metre from the bank of the Ausable River.
I looked through Gerromorpha but couldn't find a matching pattern.

They look to me like they might be water strider exuviae.

I didn't see them move
so you're probably right. And one of them is sticking up at an odd (unlifelike) angle...
