Owen gave an unqualified ID of
Aulagromyza populicola
. Still wouldn't hurt to try and rear a male if the opportunity arises--that species is supposed to make an irregular blotch mine rather than linear, and it is supposed to pupate externally. Previous records: Europe & Ontario (i.e., first record for the USA).

Another female, but...
I found 3 mines this year. One was pupating internally, but moribund. Another pupating internally, and I'm not sure. However,a third one pupated externally and yielded a female fly.

I've found similar mines, and they don't seem to match any of the known
Populus
miners. Pupation is external, so I don't think the blackish object at the end of the mine is a viable puparium.

Nice!
The two genera recorded from
Populus
are
Agromyza
and
Aulagromyza
. This might be the latter, but I'm not sure. I hope you get a male too, but even if this can only be identified to genus, it will be interesting information. Did it pupate in the mine?

yes
but finding a male is unlikely. This is the only mine I could find. Maybe next year!
