Bog Birch, blotch leaf mine with larva - Profenusa thomsoni

Bog Birch, blotch leaf mine with larva - Profenusa thomsoni
Crossman Prairie, Howard County, Iowa, USA
July 7, 2016
July 6, 2016: collected 3 leaves of blotch mines on Bog Birch, Betula pumila. One was empty, one larva was dead, one larva alive
maybe Fenusa pumila
July 10, 2016: on or before, larva emerged

Moved
Moved from Birch Leafminer.
Based on ventral markings of dead larva (and the mine makes sense for P. thomsoni too).

Maybe...
it might be Profenusa thomsoni though. A clear view of the ventral side of the larva would help (they mine belly-up). I'm confused by your dates--collected July 6, but both photos taken June 7?

Obviously I'm confused to.
Date of photos corrected.

Do I open the mine to get a clear view photo?

Ventral view
It's often possible to get a photo showing the ventral markings without opening the mine--I bet you could do it with your scope if you get the lighting right. If you still have the mine with the dead larva, you could open that one... unfortunately, before the live one emerges it will molt to a prepupa without any markings (and then will take until next spring to emerge as an adult). I am leaning toward F. pumila based on the mines.
