It's hard to tell S. hesperis from S. aphrodite down there
I'm not even sure the butterflies can tell (many seem to me to be intermediate). However, I'm inclined to say this one is probably
S. aphrodite
- can't really explain why, perhaps it's the shape of the wings. You didn't happen to get a shot of the upper side did you?
Ironically, for most Fritillaries, it's the under side that is more help, but if this is a male, the androconal scaling on the upper front wing will make it easier to tell. They are black streaks along the veins that are strongly developed in
S. hesperis
, and hardly visible in
S. aphrodite
.
