Millipede
Chestnut Top Trail, Great Smoky Mountain National Park County, Tennessee, USA
April 4, 2001
This was one busy bug. I watched it for twenty minutes with non-stop action. It would disappear in the leaf clutter and re-appear quickly. Was it hunting for food?

Rowland mentions two possibilities, so we can't be sure.

New Species-Sigmoria (millipedes)
I did not collect specimens. I do, however, have other photos of this one. That is unless there was more than one; I did not see but one at a time. I will post the other photos. One of these have been seen more than once on Chestnut Top Trail within a 1/2 mile of the trailhead at the Townsend Road.

Well, I don't know this one;
Well, I don't know this one; haven't seen this color pattern before, note particularly the broad yellow markings on the corners of the 1st segment or collum. I can only guess a new species of Sigmoria, but nothing with this yellow banded pattern is known from anywhere near the GSMNP. It goes to show that some surprises lie in wait in the "back country" of the park. It looks to me like it's probably a female; I don't suppose you collected it or others like it did you? I would surely like to see an adult male. Rowland Shelley, North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences.

yellow Sigmoria (?)
I've actually seen these yellow guys quite often. I've also seen the orange and black ones too, just not as often. Perhaps the oranges ones are the males...? I look for one that's willing to pose for a photo op.
