caterpillar - Papaipema cataphracta

caterpillar - Papaipema cataphracta
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
July 9, 2016
This caterpillar was found inside the stem of a Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) - which I noticed because the plant was dying. At this stage, it looks like the caterpillar is going to molt soon judging by the shape of the head. Would be nice if it were already going to form a pupa. The stem and caterpillar were collected two days earlier and I am keeping a large portion of the stem with caterpillar in a container. It has a healthy appetite judging by the amount of frass left on the bottom of the container. I split a portion of the stem to take this photo and then closed it up again. Resembles Papaipema cataphracta - Burdock Borer caterpillar -

Moved from Borer Moths.

Probably Papaipema nebris
.

caterpillar
I'll see if I'm successful in rearing this caterpillar to adulthood.

cataphracta
This is P. cataphracta, the only common/generalist Papaipema that has larva with all three white stripes unbroken. P. nebris only has the dorsal stripe complete.
