Unknown insect-digger bee - Melitoma taurea

Size: 1/2 to 3/4 inch
This insect has been zipping around, buzzing, and disappearing into small pea sized holes and surface tunnels in the soft dry soil under an overhanging roof. Many ant lion depressions are also in the same area. I've watched the same or a similar insect picking up flies that land on the cement floor of a different porch.
