Dumb question time: How do you know this is a female?

Euodynerus hidalgo, female (AR)
This specimen shows more extensive reddish markings than other specimens of the eastern ssp. boreoorientalis. It tends towards the nominate ssp. hidalgo, which occurs in Texas.

Mason wasp.
This is a female mason wasp in the genus Euodynerus (classic "chunky" body that many wasps in that genus have), possibly E. hidalgo, a highly-variable species.
