Size: ~ 17 mm
I believe this is a species of Lap*hria. Victim of a hit-and-run by some careless driver.

You'd think so
But this is a bee mimic syrphid. Mallota or Merodon, I would have to check the key again. I will go with male Mallota until the Syrph guys jump me.

I thought it looked a little different than Laph*ria. I agree that it is probably Mallota, as the hair coloration of Mero*don looks different than this.

Based on information/images in the Guide, I am placing this as Mallota bautias.
